Multi Layered Identities

Multi Layered Identities was a project that consisted of exhibitions and artist in residence programs held at multiple venues in Kyoto, Japan from April to May, 2018. Participated artists aware of their own “Multi Layered Identity” revisited their existential identities through their production process during the residency. From Globalism era centered on economic activities by multi-national major corporations, our present time has been shifted into Post-Globalism era where the importance of accepting diverse values and “locale” rooted in the communities have been re-recognized rather than a uniformed global value. Artists also asked questions about how to engage in local culture, reflecting the current paradigm shifts. What is “uniqueness” in internationalized contemporary daily life in Kyoto? The multi layered effects created by holding the four different projects / venues at once was to respond, by small Globalization in local contexts, to the issues raised for international city Kyoto or the entire Japan awaited to host the Olympic Games (now uncertain of it). For the artists who have been active in global contexts, this residency gave them a chance to return to “locale” as the base of their minds and very self. The production process of each arist was a journey of their identity regression, and re-recognition of their uniqueness.

Participating artists Daisuke Takeya, Jon Sasaki, Samuel André, Samuel André + Chris Mosdell, Yuki Higashino, Zikri Rahman Organized by Daisuke Takeya + ANEWAL Gallery (Katsumasa Iitaka, Naoyuki Nakagawa), Design support TANJC (Malaysia)
